Job Description

Salary: £25,000 - £26,000 pro rata

Médecins du Monde is an international humanitarian organisation whose volunteers provide medical care to vulnerable populations in both developing and developed countries. As part of that mandate we operate a free medical clinic in London, helping those who are unable to access services through the NHS. Médecins du Monde UK (Doctors of the World UK) is looking for a Press Officer for its Canary Wharf office.

Main Purpose

The Press Officer will be pivotal in raising and maintaining the profile of Medecins du Monde UK at a local and national level. He/she will be responsible for interacting with the media and researching issues to produce accurate and concise reports to promote MdM.

The purpose of the job is to ensure that the NGO key messages and campaign objectives are presented coherently through the media at both a national and local level and to target audiences.

Position's content, duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant will have an in-depth understanding of the British press, experience of devising and implementing media & PR campaigns, be a highly proactive individual, with good industry contacts. He/she will be educated to degree level or equivalent; will have first class written and verbal communication skills and be able to work constructively with others to achieve maximum positive publicity.

Main responsibilities:

Deliver on media strategy to promote the work and issues of concern to MdM UK (press releases, proactive pitching of ideas, letters to the editor…). Generate extensive, informed media coverage in appropriate local, national, trade, business and other media with a focus on both domestic and international missions. Build media relations and offer general support to Director to implement communication activities.

Required Experience: At least 3 years of experience in a similar position is a minimum requirement.

Required Key Qualifications:
  • A proven track record in delivering informed coverage at national level
  • Existing contacts with medical and broad sheet press
  • Ability to communicate our values as an organization
  • Highly organised and resourceful
  • Qualification in journalism, communications or similar
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work creatively within a limited budget
  • Flexibility, ability to multitask, detail orientated

Desirable:
  • Knowledge of international development issues
  • Working knowledge of French
